PROBLEM: The typical way of
organizing books by author
doesn’t work for me. I can’t
always remember who wrote
the book. Plus, when I’m going
to re-shelf the book, the author’s
name isn’t always in the same
place on the spine. It’s irritating to
figure out where the book goes.
SOLUTION: Try and figure out how
you remember books. If it isn’t by
author might it be by size, color, or
year that you acquired them? When
you figure out how you remember your
books you can organize them accordingly.
HINT: Remember , organization is all
about what works for you.
PROBLEM: I have a job where I need to transport files.
I can’t keep track of what files are where.
SOLUTION: Choose some sort of holder for you files.
It can be an according file (like in the picture) or a bag
with a zipper. One goal is to choose something where
the files won’t spill out when they are being transported.
A second goal is to be purposeful about choosing a specific
holder. By having a specific holder you always know where
to look for the files that aren’t in your file cabinet. Also,
you don’t have to figure out what to carry them in every
time you leave your office.
HINT: If you find it difficult to return the files to the their
correct spot in the filing cabinet, mark the spot with a post
it note.
PROBLEM: I know that it sounds
strange but I don’t put away my
clean laundry because I can’t
immediately remember where it
goes. Also, I don’t wear some of
my clothes because I can’t remember
where to find them.
SOLUTION: Labels can really be helpful
for kids and adults. You can keep a
label on a drawer long term or until
you no longer need it.
HINT: You can use post-its for the
short term and label maker tape or
regular tape for more long term
solutions. If you are worried about the
tape leaving a mark you can always hang
a string with the label around the knob.
PROBLEM: I have a closet full of clothes. I know that
there are clothes that I don’t wear. I just can’t seem to
take the time to sort through them.
SOLUTION: Turn all your hangers in the opposite
directions. When you wear something put it back in
the closet and hang it in the correct direction. After
a season it is easy to see what you wore and what you
didn’t. For example, all the clothes that are hanging in
the regular direction you know you wore. All the clothes
that are still in the opposite direction you know you didn’t
wear. This strategy gives you a quick and easy starting
point for making decisions about your clothes.
